How do you come up with ideas when you begin your writing process? Does the inspiration just come to you out of nowhere? Do you observe a place, people or things to get your ideas? Do you draw your ideas from something inside of you that needs to be expressed?
Thankfully, after my writing slump in January the ideas came back to me. And the way I found those ideas again? I just wrote, and wrote some more until something I wrote that grabbed me inspired me to write short story. Now I'm blossoming with ideas, however, finding the time to write stories has become my latest issue with two small children . . . but that is a topic for another post ;)
Summary of tips to get your ideas flowing:
- Observe places, people and things
- Reflect on a general theme or topic that is important to you
- Just write and see where the process takes you even if what you're writing doesn't make sense
- Look at pictures
- Take a Classic or a favourite story and see if you can get an idea from those
My ideas come out of nowhere. So far, I've never had writer's block, only butt block. OK, That didn't sound good. I have a hard time keeping my butt in a chair for any length of time. Perhaps duct tape?

Ray Bradbury used to say that the problem wasn't finding ideas, the problem was to not trip over them when you got out of bed in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI have perpetual writers block I think. When I write something I think it's stupid and I wish I could write something . Ya I'm not a writer :(
ReplyDeleteI'm not to 'I' yet. I took Easter Sunday off. I certainly enjoyed both. I'm just A to Z-ing it. My ideas are strictly inspiration from the deep recesses of my inner self. Is it craziness or just eccentricity? Not sure, but I just write, and my characters take over. I'm definitely not an outline person, but a write-where-my-characters-take-me person. Oh the voices in my head. hehehe Hey, I love everyone's comments.
ReplyDeleteHello, Siobhan! I get ideas from everywhere: a phone conversation, reading the newspaper, watching a movie, playing with my nieces and nephews, people watching while standing in line. Ideas just pop into my head seemingly from nowhere!
ReplyDeleteSure, there are times I feel as though I'm not coming up with anything fresh. That's why I like to do writing prompts (On Wednesday's I post prompts for a feature called Wednesday's Writing Workout). It helps generate new ideas! Sometimes I like using the characters and settings from my own wips for prompts, too, if I'm trying to come up with a new plot twist or something. Prompts are always a great idea for getting new ideas!!
